How to set up bundle upsells in Simple Bundles
The Upsells feature in Simple Bundles allows you to recommend bundle products to customers at checkout, helping increase your average order value (AOV). When a customer checks out with a product that is also part of a bundle, Simple Bundles will suggest the bundle as an upsell, giving customers an easy way to upgrade their purchase
Requirements
- Shopify Plus plan: Checkout upsells require Shopify checkout blocks, which are only available on Shopify Plus.
- At least one active bundle is set up in Simple Bundles.
- The Upsell feature currently supports Simple Bundle types only. Infinite Options and BYOB bundles are not available as upsell suggestions at this time.
You can access the Upsells settings directly within the Simple Bundles app:
1. Open Simple Bundles & Kits in your Shopify Admin
2. In the left-hand menu, click Upsells
How to configure your Upsell settings
On the Upsells page, you will find two main configuration sections:
1. Choose where Upsells appear
This section controls where the upsell recommendation is shown to customers:
2. Pick which bundle to recommend first
If a product belongs to more than one bundle, this setting determines which bundle is shown as the upsell suggestion first:
- Best-selling: Uses order data to surface the most popular bundle. Falls back to the highest price when order data is not available.
- Highest price: Surfaces the highest-priced bundle to maximize average order value.
- Newest: Shows the most recently created bundle first.
On the right side of the Upsells page, you’ll find several cards that give you an overview of your upsell setup and performance.
Status
Set the upsell feature to Active or Inactive. The upsell widget will only appear to customers when the status is set to Active.
Upsell product details
Displays a summary of your current upsell setup, including:
- Number of active bundles available for upselling
- Number of products included across those active bundles
Upsell performance
Shows upsell conversion data over the last 30 days, including AOV lift. Performance metrics will appear once customers start purchasing bundles through upsells. Note that upsell conversion data gets synced every 4 hours.
Upsell widget
This card shows whether the upsell block has been added to your checkout page in the Shopify theme editor. Use the Open checkout page button to go directly to the theme editor and place the bundle upsells block on your checkout page.
Sync checkout data
Bundle upsells data syncs automatically. If you’ve recently made changes to your bundles and they’re not reflecting in the upsell widget, use the Sync Now button to push the latest data to Shopify immediately.
Note: The Sync Now button syncs bundle data to the checkout widget but does not trigger a sync of upsell conversion/AOV data. Conversion data syncs automatically every 4 hours.
How to add the Upsell block to your checkout page
Once you’ve configured the upsells settings, you’ll need to add the Simple Bundles upsell block to your checkout page in the Shopify theme editor:
- On the Upsells page in Simple Bundles, click Open checkout page
- In the left panel, search for Bundle upsell - Checkout under the Simple Bundles & Kits section.
- Click the + button next to it and select Add to → Checkout.
- The block will appear in the checkout preview. You can customise the heading text, button labels, image size, and corner radius in the right-hand settings panel.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
Enabling the Upsell block for Shop Pay
If your store uses Shop Pay, you'll need to take one additional step to ensure the upsell block appears for Shop Pay checkouts as well. This setting is hidden inside the block's settings panel and is easy to miss:
- In the checkout theme editor, click on the Bundle upsell - Checkout block to select it
- In the right-hand settings panel, click Checkout behavior to expand the section
- Toggle on Include block in Shop Pay
- Click Save
Without this step, the upsell block will not appear for customers checking out via Shop Pay.
How the Upsell appears at checkout
For upsell styles and customization, you may refer to this guide: PDP Upsells styles customization
When a customer checks out with a product that is part of a bundle, they will see a “Save more with bundles” section on the checkout page. The upsell shows:
- The bundle name and image
- Which product in their cart does it replace
- What other items are included in the bundle (expandable)
- An Add button to upgrade to the bundle
Simple Bundles shows up to 2 upsell suggestions per checkout. Suggestions are based on the most expensive item in the cart when there are multiple items.
Bundle upsell suggestions require available inventory
For a bundle to appear as an upsell suggestion, all products included in the bundle must have available inventory. If any product in the bundle is out of stock or has zero inventory, the bundle will not be shown to customers.
If you're not seeing bundle suggestions and you've confirmed the product belongs to a bundle:
- Check that every product in the bundle has available inventory in Shopify.
- Make sure the bundle itself is set to Active status in Simple Bundles.
- If you recently restocked, allow a few moments for inventory to sync, or use the Sync Now button on the Upsells page.
