Creating bundles with a subscription plan in Simple Bundles 1.0

Applies to Simple Bundles 1.0 only. If you’re using Simple Bundles 2.0 with a subscription app, refer to this article.

You can use most subscription apps on the Shopify App Store, like Seal Subscriptions, ReCharge, and Appstle, to sell a subscription as a bundle. Currently, you can only sell a bundle with a subscription plan and cannot have a subscription-only product in a bundle.

Bundle subscription configuration

  • Bundle with a subscription plan [SUPPORTED]: When setting up a subscription on a bundle, all products added to the bundle should be available to be purchased outside a subscription
  • One-time purchase bundle with subscription products [NOT SUPPORTED]: If a product in your bundle is set up to be only available via subscription, it cannot be sold as part of a standard one-time bundle. Attempting to do so will result in errors at checkout.

If a product in your bundle is set up to be only available via subscription, it cannot be sold as part of a standard one-time bundle.

✅ Bundle type recommendation in Simple Bundles 1.0

Best option: Single-price bundle

Why is it ideal?:

  • Subscription apps apply the subscription logic—like delivery frequency, billing schedule, and customer portal access—to the parent bundle product only, not the individual items inside.
  • The single-price bundle treats the bundle as a single product with one price, making it fully compatible with how subscription apps manage recurring orders.
  • How a single-price bundle breaks down in the Shopify order admin

Most merchants using Simple Bundles 1.0 with a subscription app create a single-price bundle, apply the subscription plan to the parent bundle product, and let Simple Bundles add the bundle contents to each recurring Shopify order.

The separately-priced items bundle is not ideal for subscription products since it removes the parent bundle (where the subscription is applied), breaking the recurring order flow.
