How to create bundles within bundles (nested) in Simple Bundles 2.0

Simple Bundles lets you create nested bundles to sell on your Shopify store. A nested bundle is a bundle that contains other bundles within it. This is great for making inventory and logistics simpler (if you already sell those smaller bundles separately), and for offering tiered value, letting customers buy individual items, smaller bundles, or the larger bundle.

How to create a nested bundle in Simple Bundles

Since a nested bundle is simply a Shopify product that has already been set up as its own bundle in Simple Bundles, adding it to a larger bundle works the same way as adding any other product component; there's no separate process required. For example, let's say you're building a "Morning Routine Bundle" and want to include a 4-pack Moisturizer as one of its items, where that 4-pack is itself already configured as its own bundle in Simple Bundles.

1. Navigate to Simple Bundles. Click "Create Bundle." Select "Existing Bundle Product" (or "New Bundle Product") and choose your main bundle, "Morning Routine Bundle."

2. Click "Add Products," then search for and select the products you want to include. This can be a mix of regular products (like "Daily Rescue Facial Mist") and existing bundle products (like your "4-pack Moisturizer" bundle); add them the same way.

3. Click "Save Bundle" to finalize the nested structure.

That's it, since the nested bundle (4-pack Moisturizer) already has its own components configured, they'll carry through automatically once it's added as a component of the main bundle.

How nested bundles are processed at checkout

The main (outer) bundle is still processed using Shopify's Cart Transform API, the same as a standard 2.0 bundle, so it doesn't appear as a line item on the order once broken down.

However, any nested bundle inside the main bundle is processed using the Order Editing method instead. This means:

• The nested bundle's own line stays on the order at its full price, rather than being broken down and removed the way a Cart Transform bundle would be.
• The nested bundle's contents (its components) are added to the order alongside it at a 100% discount.

This is an important behavioral difference to be aware of before building a nested bundle structure: while the outer bundle breaks down cleanly via Cart Transform, each nested bundle inside it will still show up as its own line item, with its components listed at $0, rather than disappearing entirely. This affects how the order appears to customers and in Shopify Admin, and how it interacts with 3PL/WMS systems.

Create nested bundles with up to 10 levels

When creating nested bundles in Simple Bundles, keep the nesting levels within a reasonable limit for optimal performance. Each additional level of nesting adds depth to the bundle structure, which can impact processing and loading times.

Nesting Limit:

• Optimal Levels: You can create nested bundles with up to 10 levels.
• Breakdown Capability: The app effectively processes and displays all components within these 10 levels. This means that when you create bundles exceeding this limit, any components exceeding this threshold will not undergo processing and will not appear in the Order Admin section of Shopify.

Inventory syncing for nested bundles

Inventory is automatically synced for nested bundles. For example, if you or a customer adjusts the inventory of a product within a nested bundle, the inventory for any bundle that includes that product, whether directly or within another bundle, will be updated accordingly.
