Using Klaviyo with Simple Bundles: How to show the parent bundle in abandoned checkout emails
Overview
Simple Bundles works alongside Klaviyo for email marketing and automation. Because Klaviyo pulls cart and order data directly from Shopify, there are a few important behaviours to be aware of when sending bundle-related emails, particularly abandoned checkout flows, so that customers see the right product information.
By default, the abandoned checkout email displays the expanded component products instead of the parent bundle product. Our support team can help you modify your Klaviyo email template so it displays the parent bundle product instead, creating a cleaner and more customer-friendly experience. More information on setting up abandoned checkout notifications here.
How Shopify passes bundle data to Klaviyo
When a customer abandons a checkout that contains a Simple Bundles product, Klaviyo’s abandoned cart email will show the individual bundle components rather than the bundle product itself. This is a known limitation caused by how Shopify’s Cart Transform API interacts with Klaviyo’s data capture. This guide explains why it happens and what you can do about it.
When a Simple Bundles product is purchased, here is what happens in sequence:
- The bundle parent product is added to the Shopify cart as a single line item.
- At checkout, Shopify’s Cart Transform API expands the bundle into its individual component products and prices.
Klaviyo’s abandoned checkout trigger fires after the Cart Transform expansion has already taken place. This means the data Klaviyo receives reflects the broken-down component products and prices, not the bundle product and price itself, which is why customers see individual components in the email rather than the bundle they actually added to their cart.
What Klaviyo’s abandoned checkout email shows
Because Klaviyo receives the post-Cart Transform data, the abandoned checkout email will show the expanded component products rather than the bundle product. Here is what that looks like in practice:
Displaying the parent bundle product in your abandoned checkout emails
This is a Shopify platform limitation, so we can't change it from within Simple Bundles. The good news, though, is that there is a workaround! You can modify your Klaviyo email template to still display the parent bundle product, presenting it in a cleaner, more customer-friendly way.
To get this set up, reach out to our support team at hello@simplebundles.io, and we will be happy to assist. To allow our team to customize the template on your behalf, you will need to grant us access to your Klaviyo account by following the steps below.
