Using the “Break Down Bundles in Order”
The Break down bundles in order action lets you manually split a bundle on an existing order into its component products. You'll find it in the More actions menu on any order in your Shopify admin.
Most of the time you won't need it. Bundles break down on their own at checkout, and if you edit an order within 1 hour of it being placed, Simple Bundles breaks down any bundles you add automatically. This action covers the cases where that doesn't happen.
When to use it
Use this action when you add a bundle to an order with Shopify's Edit option and the order was placed more than 1 hour ago. The 1-hour window starts when the order is placed, not when you edit it, so a bundle added to yesterday's order won't break down until you run this action.
This works for Simple bundles, including bundles with separately-priced items. Infinite Options and Build Your Own Bundle (BYOB) bundles work differently, see Infinite Options and BYOB bundles below.
How to use it
- After adding the bundle, wait a few seconds so Shopify can send the updated order to Simple Bundles.
- Open the order in your Shopify admin.
- Click More actions in the top-right corner.
- Select Break down bundles in order.
You'll be taken to Simple Bundles with the message "Order is being processed..." The breakdown runs in the background. Go back to the order and refresh the page after a minute to see the component products.
If you run the action right after editing the order and nothing changes, wait a minute and try again. Running it more than once is safe. Bundles that are already broken down are skipped.
When it won't help
Infinite Options and BYOB bundles added with Edit
Infinite Options and BYOB bundles break down based on what the customer picked on your store, like a size, flavor, or the items they chose for their box. Simple Bundles saves those choices on the bundle when the customer adds it to their cart.
When you add one of these bundles with Shopify's Edit option, Shopify has no way to include the customer's choices, so Simple Bundles can't tell which components to add. The bundle stays as a single item, and running this action won't change it. No error message is shown. The same applies to draft orders you create in your Shopify admin.
Instead, add the component products to the order directly, in the quantities the customer needs.
If the bundle came from an order placed on your store and didn't break down at checkout, this action can still break it down, because the customer's choices were saved with the order.
Bundles added through an exchange
If you add a bundle as an exchange item (Return > Exchange on the order), it won't break down, automatically or with this action. Shopify stores exchange items on the return rather than as regular items on the order, so Simple Bundles can't see them.
Instead, you can:
- Exchange for the individual component products instead of the bundle, using the same quantities the bundle contains.
- Process the return, then send the replacement bundle on a new order, such as a draft order. The bundle on the new order breaks down as usual. For Infinite Options and BYOB bundles, use the component products instead (see above).
Orders that are already broken down
If a bundle on the order was already broken down but some components are missing, this action won't add them. It only runs on bundles that haven't been broken down yet. Missing components usually mean the bundle's setup changed after the order was placed. Check our help guide here: Why didn't my bundle break down into individual SKUs?
If you sell Infinite Options bundles, turning on Infinite Options selection validation helps prevent incomplete selections from reaching checkout.
Orders from other sales channels
This action doesn't fix orders from sales channels that don't support bundles, such as TikTok Shop, or pricing differences on draft orders. Contact our support team if you're seeing either of these.
