Offer deposits and split payments on bundles with Downpay + Simple Bundles 1.0 & 2.0

Use Downpay with Simple Bundles to offer deposits, down payments, and split payments on bundled products. This setup is especially useful for pre-orders, made-to-order items, and higher-priced bundles where customers may hesitate to pay the full amount up front.

What this integration does

Downpay lets your customers pay a deposit up front and complete the remaining balance later, without credit checks or third-party financing. When used with Simple Bundles, you can offer bundle products that include both a bundle discount (optional) and a deposit or split-payment option. This setup is ideal for pre-order bundles, made-to-order bundles, and higher-priced bundles where you want to reduce upfront price friction, increase conversion, and lift average order value.

Setup: Downpay + Simple Bundles

Step 1: Install both apps

Install Simple Bundles and Downpay from the Shopify App Store. Once both are installed, you’re ready to create your bundle and apply a Downpay purchase option to it.

Step 2: Create your bundle in Simple Bundles

In Simple Bundles, create the bundle you want customers to purchase. You can build either a Simple Bundle (a fixed set of items) or an Infinite Options bundle (where customers select from options). After creating your bundle, confirm that the bundle product was created successfully in Shopify and that it appears correctly on your storefront.

For example, if you bundle a bracelet and ring that cost $75 each, and apply a 25% bundle discount, the bundle price would become $112.50.

Step 3: Create a Downpay purchase option for the bundle product

Next, open Downpay and create a purchase option for the bundle product created by Simple Bundles. This is important: you should apply Downpay to the bundle product itself, not the individual component items inside the bundle. Once you select the bundle product in Downpay, configure your deposit terms (for example, a 10% deposit) and save the purchase option.

In the example above, the customer would see the discounted bundle price ($112.50) and also have the option to pay 10% today, then complete the remaining balance later.

Step 4: Verify the bundle discount and deposit option on your storefront

Visit your bundle product page and confirm that the pricing looks correct, the Downpay deposit option is visible, and checkout works as expected when the bundle is added to cart.

Important considerations

Downpay purchase options must be created for the bundle products you create in Simple Bundles, not on the individual products within a bundle. If you only create Downpay purchase options on the component products, customers will not see the correct deposit option when purchasing the bundle product.

Also note that bundle purchase options override any Downpay purchase options you may already have on the individual items inside the bundle. This is expected behavior, and it ensures that the deposit terms apply to the bundle purchase as a single product.

Finally, each bundle you want to sell with deposits needs its own Downpay purchase option, because each bundle is a separate Shopify product.

Troubleshooting

If the deposit option isn’t showing on the bundle product page, the most common cause is that the purchase option was created on the component products instead of the bundle product. You should also confirm that the purchase option is active in Downpay. If you’re using a custom theme, it’s possible the Downpay widget requires a small adjustment in your theme to display correctly.

If the bundle pricing or discount looks wrong, check your bundle discount settings in Simple Bundles and confirm that your theme is showing the bundle product price correctly. If you recently made changes, try viewing the page in an incognito window to rule out cached pricing.

FAQ

Can I apply Downpay to the individual items inside the bundle instead?

You can, but it’s not recommended for bundle purchases. If the customer is buying the bundle product, Downpay must be applied to the bundle product so the deposit terms apply correctly to the purchase.

What happens if component products already have Downpay purchase options?

When the customer purchases the bundle product, the bundle’s Downpay purchase option overrides any purchase options on the individual component products. This is expected and ensures consistent deposit terms at the bundle level.

Does this work with mix-and-match bundles?

Yes. As long as you apply Downpay to the correct bundle product created by Simple Bundles, the integration works the same way.
