Why doesn't Shopify's "Buy again" button work with Infinite Options and BYOB bundles?

Shopify's "Buy again" button in new customer accounts re-adds the products from a past order, but it doesn't carry over line item properties. Infinite Options and BYOB bundles store the customer's choices in a line item property, so when they're reordered through Buy again, the bundle comes back with no selections. Fixed (Simple Bundle type) bundles aren't affected and reorder normally.

To stop customers from reordering a bundle without its contents, keep cart validation turned on and hide the Buy again button in your checkout settings. Both steps are below.

Why are bundle selections lost on Buy again?

When a customer picks options on an Infinite Options bundle, or builds a box with BYOB, Simple Bundles saves those choices on the cart line as a hidden property. At checkout, our cart transform reads that property to work out which component products to add to the order.

Buy again builds a cart link from the variant IDs and quantities on the original order, for example:

https://yourstore.com/cart/58758208291080:1,58682783006984:1

The link has no room for line item properties, so the bundle product is added on its own and Simple Bundles has nothing to tell it which components the customer chose. This is a Shopify limitation that affects any product relying on line item properties, and apps and themes can't change how the button builds the link.

Which bundle types are affected?

Bundle type Reorders correctly with Buy again?
Simple Bundle (fixed contents) Yes. The components are saved on the bundle itself, so the bundle expands into the same products every time.
Infinite Options No. The customer's option choices are lost.
Build Your Own Bundle (BYOB) No. The products the customer picked are lost.

What happens when a customer clicks Buy again?

The outcome depends on whether cart validation is on.

With cart validation on

Cart validation blocks any Infinite Options or BYOB bundle that has no selections. Because Buy again sends the customer straight from their account to the storefront, Shopify has no cart or checkout page to show the validation message on. The bundle is blocked, the customer lands on your store with an empty cart, and no error appears. If the order also had non-bundle products, those can be blocked along with it.

This is confusing for the customer, but no incomplete order gets through.

With cart validation off

Nothing stops the bundle, so it goes through checkout as the bundle product alone. The order arrives with no component products, which means nothing for your team or fulfillment app to pick and pack.

We don't recommend turning cart validation off to make Buy again "work". It swaps a confusing empty cart for orders that can't be fulfilled.

How to fix it

1. Keep cart validation on

Cart validation also protects you from other ways a bundle can reach checkout without selections, such as quick "Add to cart" buttons and the Shop app. If it isn't on yet, follow Cart validation for Infinite Options and BYOB bundles.

2. Hide the Buy again button

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
  2. Click Customize to open the checkout editor.
  3. Open Settings in the editor.
  4. Find Buy again button and turn it off.
  5. Click Save.

This hides the button on both the order status page and the orders page in customer accounts. Shopify announced the option in their changelog: Buy again button on order status page and orders page can now be hidden.

The setting applies to your whole store, so Buy again is hidden for regular products too. Shopify doesn't offer a way to hide it for bundles only.

How can customers reorder a bundle?

Customers can reorder from the bundle's product page, where they pick their options or build their box again. If you're hiding Buy again, a link to your bundle pages in your order emails or account pages makes this easier to find.

If only your fixed bundles are reordered through Buy again, you can leave the button on. Those bundles reorder with all their components.
