Simple Bundles: Comparing the different bundle types
Simple Bundles offers three different ways to build a bundle: Simple Bundle, Infinite Options, and Build Your Own Bundle (BYOB). Each is built for a different kind of shopping experience, and picking the right one comes down to how much choice you want to give your customers and how your products are set up in Shopify.
This guide gives you a quick side-by-side comparison of the three, plus how to preview each one for your own store using our demo site.
For full setup instructions, see the dedicated guide for each bundle type:

Simple Bundle: Fixed kits that ship as one
Best for: a curated set of products sold together at one discounted price. Think trios, duos, or "the everyday kit."
How customers experience it: one product page with the bundle contents already put together. If your bundle product has variant options (e.g., size or color), customers can still choose between them on the product page, just like a normal Shopify product; they're just choosing a variant of the whole kit rather than customizing what's inside it.
Strengths:
- The fastest bundle type to set up, since it uses Shopify's native variants.
- Still supports variant choice on the product page (e.g., "Small" vs. "Large" kit) when needed, without requiring customers to configure the bundle's contents themselves.
- A strong lever for lifting average order value without adding friction to checkout.
Keep in mind: Simple Bundle is best suited for bundles with a fixed set of products or a limited number of variants, since it's built on Shopify's native variant system (capped at 2,048 variants and 3 options per product). If your bundle needs more combinations than that, Infinite Options is the better fit.
Looking to promote your bundles rather than build one from scratch? Simple bundle types can also be offered as an upsell on your product pages, not just as their own standalone product. See How to set up bundle upsells in Simple Bundles to learn how.
Infinite Options: Customizable sets with swatches and dropdowns
Best for: letting customers personalize a set, like choosing a chain color and a pendant style, without hitting Shopify's variant limits.
How customers experience it: rich dropdowns or visual swatches on the product page, so customers can mix and match options that feel native to your brand, not plain default select menus.
Strengths:
- Removes Shopify's 2,048 variant / 3 option ceiling entirely, ideal for bundles with many possible combinations.
- Supports more complex offerings, like mix-and-match bundles, that a fixed Simple Bundle setup can't handle.
- Swatches and dropdowns can be customized to match your brand rather than looking like a generic form.
Keep in mind: since Infinite Options doesn't use Shopify's native variants, the options selector widget needs to be added to your product page (usually a quick app embed toggle, no code required).
BYOB (Build Your Own Bundle): A bundle builder customers play with
Best for: letting customers build their own box from a broader product grid, picking exactly what they want up to a pack size, and watching their discount grow as they add more.
How customers experience it: a visual grid of your products, pack size options like "Pick any 3, 5, or 8," and a live discount that increases with each item added. They build, watch the price drop, and check out in one click.
Strengths:
- The most flexible, customer-driven experience of the three, great for stores that want to offer real personalization at scale (think sampler packs, mix-and-match snack boxes, or curated skincare sets).
- Built-in tiered discounting rewards customers for adding more items, encouraging larger orders.
- No theme code required to set up the shopping experience.
Keep in mind: Like Infinite Options, the BYOB app embed needs to be enabled in your theme before the builder will display on your product page.
