How to create a BYOB (build-your-own-bundle) experience on Shopify using Simple Bundles

Let customers build their own bundle (BYOB). Shoppers pick products from a visual grid and fill their box. No theme code required.

How to set up build your own bundle

Build Your Own Bundle lets customers choose products from a set list and receive a discount when they add enough items to their bundle.

Use this guide to create a BYOB bundle in Simple Bundles & Kits.

Create a BYOB bundle on Simple Bundles

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps.
2. Open Simple Bundles & Kits.
3. In the left sidebar, select BYOB.
4. Click Create bundle.

Add bundle details

1. Enter a Bundle title.

   This is the title customers will see on your storefront.

2. Set the bundle Status.

   Choose Active when the bundle is ready to publish. Choose Draft if you want to finish setup before making it available.

Add products to the bundle

1. In the Products section, click Edit products.
2. Select the products customers can choose from.
3. Click Save.

Customers will only be able to build their bundle using the products you add here.

Set pricing

In the Pricing section, choose one of the following options:

Based on items selected

Customers pay based on the products they choose. Discounts can still be applied through pack sizes.

Use this option when products have different prices.

Fixed price

Customers pay one set price for the bundle, regardless of which products they choose.

Use this option when you want every completed bundle to have the same price.

Create pack sizes

Pack sizes let you offer different discounts based on how many items a customer adds to the bundle.

For example:

To create a pack size:

1. In the Pack sizes section, enter a Pack name.
2. Enter the number of Items required.
3. Enter the Discount amount.
4. Click Add pack to create another pack size, if needed.

Customers will see these pack options on the storefront.

Add BYOB to your theme

To display the BYOB experience on your storefront, the BYOB app embed must be enabled in your Shopify theme.

1. In the Add BYOB to theme section, click View in theme.
2. Enable the BYOB app embed.
3. Save your theme changes.

After this is enabled, customers can view the BYOB page, select products, and build their bundle from the storefront.

Preview the bundle

Click Preview to check the storefront experience before sharing the bundle with customers.

Using subscriptions and selling plans

BYOB now automatically detects selling plans on products and displays them for customer selection in the bundle widget. This allows customers to choose between a one-time purchase and a subscription when building their bundle.

How selling plans work in BYOB

When products in your BYOB have selling plans attached, the widget will display them as selectable options for the customer. The behavior depends on how the selling plan is configured for the product:

• Optional selling plans - customers see both a "One-time purchase" option and the available subscription plans. Selecting "One-time purchase" behaves exactly like a normal BYOB purchase.
• Required selling plans - only subscription options are shown. Customers must choose a selling plan to proceed.

Pricing with selling plans

• For one-time purchases, the compare-at price is shown alongside the default bundle discount, so customers can see the savings.
• For subscription purchases, the subscription discount stacks on top of the bundle price, giving customers an additional saving for subscribing.

Important: Fixed Pricing is required

To use selling plans with BYOB, your bundle must be configured with Fixed Pricing. BYOB bundles set to "Based on items selected" will not display selling plan options; this is by design.

The reason is technical: Shopify automatically disables the Cart Transform API when a selling plan is present in the cart. Since "Based on items selected" pricing relies on Cart Transform to calculate and allocate prices across components, it cannot be used alongside selling plans. With Fixed Pricing, the bundle price is set upfront and doesn't depend on Cart Transform, so it works seamlessly with selling plans.

When a BYOB bundle with a selling plan is purchased, the order is processed using the order editing fallback (since Cart Transform is disabled by Shopify for selling plan orders). This works seamlessly with Fixed Pricing and ensures the bundle components are correctly added to the order. See How to create bundles with a subscription plan for more information.

"Powered by Simple Bundles" branding

To hide or enable the branding:

1. Go to Simple Bundles > Settings
2. Scroll down to Advanced Settings
3. From the Simple Bundles branding, toggle the Hide "Powered by Simple Bundles" branding.
4. Click Save.
