Building product bundles with 2048 bundle variants on Shopify

Shopify increases product variant limit from 100 to 2048

In Shopify's Winter '24 Editions, Shopify announced an increase in the product variant limit from 100 to 2048. This update, enabled by its new GraphQL APIs, aims to better support stores with extensive product catalogs that include a wide variety of colorways, sizes, and SKUs.

What does this mean for my bundles?

Simple Bundles has three bundle types: Simple Bundle, Infinite Options, and Build Your Own Bundle (BYOB). See Comparing the different bundle types. The Simple Bundle type uses Shopify's native variant system, which previously capped at 100 variants (See: Adding variants on Shopify). In contrast, Infinite Options bundles offer the flexibility to create bundles with an unlimited number of options, variants, and combinations.

If you previously used the infinite options bundle type to bypass Shopify’s 100-variant limit, but your bundles now fall within the 2048-variant range, you can switch to the simple bundle type. This change brings benefits such as improved use of Shopify's native variant selector and refined pricing for bundle combinations. However, if you’re satisfied with your current infinite options bundle setup, there’s no need to switch.

Building bundles faster

Managing up to 2,048 variants can be time-consuming. Here are some ways to speed up the process:

More than 2,048 variants? Use the infinite options bundle type

Certain scenarios, especially those involving complex product combinations, may require more than 2,048 variants. In these scenarios, use the Infinite Options bundle type. Examples include:

  • Choosing 4 items (options), each in 7 sizes (variants), leading to 2,401 combinations.
  • Choosing 3 items, each in 3 colors and 5 sizes, resulting in 3,375 combinations.
  • Choosing 6 items, each in 10 flavors, which would create 1,000,000 combinations.

While Shopify has increased product variant limits from 100 to 2048, the number of options remains the same at 3 maximum options. To create more options, use the Infinite Options bundle type, a Build Your Own Bundle (BYOB) where customers pick from a product grid, or Shopify's combined listings.

Example of an infinite options bundle with 12 options (dropdowns) containing 10 variants each. This bundle exceeds the 2048 limit at 10^12 bundle variant combinations
