Example: Creating mix-and-match bundles with product options
This article applies to Simple Bundles 1.0. If you're using Simple Bundles 2.0, refer to Creating Fixed Bundles, Multipacks, and Mix-and-Match (Infinite Options) Bundles in Simple Bundles 2.0.
A mix-and-match bundle lets customers build their own bundle by choosing an option for each item, such as a style for each product in a kit. In Simple Bundles 1.0, you create the choices as options on a Shopify product, then add the matching individual SKUs to each bundle variant in the app.
The example below is a kitchen bundle with a choice of styles for each item.
How do I create a mix-and-match bundle?
Step 1: Create the bundle product and its options in Shopify
This product becomes your bundle in Simple Bundles.
- In your Shopify admin, create the product that will become your bundle.
- In the Variants section, click + Add options like size or color.
- Add the options your customers can choose from, then click Done and Save.
In this example, the product has three options:
- Option 1: 3 apron styles
- Option 2: 3 market bag styles
- Option 3: 3 dish towel styles
That makes 27 variants (combinations). If you have a lot of bundles to build, you can import them in bulk with a CSV file.
Note: Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants and 3 options per product. See Building product bundles with 2048 bundle variants on Shopify. If you need more combinations than that, use the infinite options bundle type.
Step 2: Turn the product into a bundle in Simple Bundles
- In Simple Bundles, go to Bundles v1.0 and click Build bundle.
- Find the product you created. Selecting the product also selects all of its variants (27 in this example).
- Click Select.
Step 3: Add the individual SKUs to each bundle variant
Each option combination needs its own individual SKUs. In this example, the bundle variant Kitchen essentials bundle - Armadillos / Coral / London Grey contains:
- Classic Apron - Armadillos
- French-style Market Bag - Coral
- Symmetry Dishtowel - London Grey
- In the Products card, click Add products.
- Find and select each individual SKU, then confirm your selection.
- Repeat for each bundle variant.
Note: If an item belongs in every variant, open the menu next to it in the Products card and click Add to all 27 bundle variants (the number matches your bundle) instead of adding it one variant at a time. Save the bundle first to turn this option on.
Step 4: Set the quantities and bundle price
- In the Products card, set the Quantity of each individual SKU.
- In the Bundle details card, set the Price.
- Click Save.
Note: If you don't sell these SKUs on their own, hide them from your storefront so they're only sold in the bundle. See Selling products exclusively through bundles on Simple Bundles v1.0 and v2.0.
What do customers see?
Customers pick an option for each item on the product page.
After they select the options, they add the bundle to the cart.
After checkout, Simple Bundles edits the order to add the individual SKUs. In your Shopify admin, the order shows the bundle along with its individual SKUs.
Does Simple Bundles 2.0 handle this differently?
Yes. 2.0 has three builders: Simple Bundles for variant-based bundles like this one, Infinite Options for bundles past Shopify's variant limits, and Build your own bundle (BYOB) for a product grid where customers pick items. 2.0 also adds the individual SKUs at checkout instead of editing the order afterward.
